Can You Outsmart a Ransomware Attack?

July 21, 2017

Being well-versed in ransomware risks is increasingly important for retaining customer trust in today’s business environment, which is why we’ve discussed the issue before. However, new threats and viruses are being created everyday, and it’s important to stay on top of emerging trends in cyber defense.

Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) is on the rise, and it’s crucial for employees at all levels to understand how they can help protect their data assets. RaaS refers to the increasing accessibility of ransomware attack tools, in which advanced hackers and attackers create a ransomware program, and then make it available for anyone to download and use. This trend means that even users with limited knowledge of code can use viruses created by hackers to attack a company’s data.

RaaS can function in two different ways. The first type of ransomware encrypts a user’s data so that it can’t be used by the original owner. Typically, hackers will charge the owner a large fee (payable in bitcoin) to regain access to the data. In the second type of ransomware attack, the hacker will attack data safety lock the target victim’s device, making it unusable and inaccessible. The growing trend of ransomware attacks means that it’s more important than ever for companies and IT departments to keep themselves educated on potential vulnerabilities. With data breaches costing approximately $2.1 trillion globally, according to Veeam, it’s clear that businesses stand to lose.

The only way to truly guarantee protection from ransomware attacks is to ensure that your data is backed up safely. If your data is not backed up, your only choice will be to pay your attacker to regain access to your device or data.

Do you know how to outsmart a ransomware attack? In partnership with Veeam, we’re now offering an interactive quiz to help you test your knowledge! Take the test, and download our free ransomware guide.
